PopMatters Picks: The Best Music of 2006. A short but solid list.

The Top Ten Stories You Missed in 2006. There needs to be more coverage of news stories that don’t get coverage. If that makes any sense.

This podcast on the history of the Byzantine Empire is amazing and that it is available free on the internet speaks well for the future. It focuses on 12 rules and effect on the empire.

The quality is amazing and the depth of information is incredible. For me it is a little dense and could have used a slightly slower pace so I could better absorb the information but other wise this is a college coarse in MP3 format. I feel I deserve credit just for listening to it.

If you have any interest in history or Byzantine, which I have both, you must give this project a listen.

Give it a try: 1 – Introduction (12.8 Meg MP3 13:55)

I’m interested in any movie Rainn Wilson is in (Video).

I thought the horribly cliché book Eragon might make a better movie. I was wrong as RottenTomatoes gives the movie a 14% Fresh.

Great interview with Stephen Colbert on Charlie Rose. This is one of the few times I’ve really seen him out of character.

I’ve Stopped reading Kate Elliot’s new book Spirit Gate. I read about half of the 7 books in the Crown of Stars series in high school. I really like the stories Kate Elliot has to tell. She really creates very full characters and realistic worlds. Her female characters are particularly strong and realistic in a genera where they are often used as props.

I just can’t read it fast enough. I’m a slow reader and Kate writes dense books. Only getting through a couple of pages on the commute to work and back is just not satisfying enough. I wish it wasn’t the case but I think I’m going to have to sadly give up on Kate Elliot.

The origin of the western school system is actually kind of frightening.

Nintendo is offering free strap replacement for up to 4 Wii controllers. I heard that they switched out the old strap to the new strap very quickly but this level of customer service almost unprecedented.

Every once in a while a movie trailer pulls the wool over my eyes. The last time that happened it was Uptown Girls (I can wait for the laughter to stop). When I saw the preview I was expecting a funny, cute and genuine movie much like the movie Little Manhattan (Trailer).

My office building kind of caught fire today. Not fun at all.

Prewalking: walking down the subway platform so that when you board the train, you’ll be close to the exit or transfer point when the train reaches its destination. (via Kottke) I do that every day!

Dreamhost is now offering 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations free hosting forever. Not a bad deal.
