Did it actually happen? Are your "obsolete" files still there after 30 days?

In the free version (mozy home), files that have been deleted or moved from your hd and marked for backup are *NOT* removed from the mozy servers after 30 days, and they count against your free quota. I guess this is a way to try to get more paying customers?

Stefan, I agree. One of the main reasons I was looking at backup solutions was to free up space on my disk. I have tons of stuff that I dont use regularly but I do want archived. I am currently trying out www.elephantdrive.com . They keep the data around unless I delete it explicitly. Was able to free up tons of space on my drive after uploading it there.

I guess you have a choice - you can use Mozy, and accept that after 30 days the backup will be deleted, or you can try a different service. Eg Angel Backup - http://www.angelbackup.com - where your files are kept forever - but you do have the option of deleting them from the servers.

when people think of backup they think of forever. They don't have to do that but it's not what I expect so i would think they could make it more clear.

Besides.. I want to delete files from their service and they will not let me.

By saying this, you imply that Mozy should retain every piece of data you ever create, indefinitely. This is ridiculous. It's a backup service, not a permanent online archive. For $5 / month, if it's not important enough to retain on your hard drive, why should Mozy bear the cost of keeping it forever? I can see arguing that they should offer a longer retention period (as they apparently provide for Enterprise customers) at an additional cost. But for $5/month unlimited, 30 days seems reasonable.
