Michael Arrington Loves Learning things. After learning he doesn’t know anything about web services he now want to learn he doesn’t know anything about hardware. Next I think he will learn how not to run for public office.
I have to say I wasn’t wild about the end of Dr Horrible. I didn’t dislike it. I just didn’t like it as much as the first too parts. I think the songs were a little weaker which did not do a good job of highlighting the change to a sadder tone. I’m still buying the DVD though so I can’t wait for that to come out.
I’ve been trying to get my friend more involved with the internet for about 7 years now. Recently I seem to have made a lot of headway and now I’ve been getting some amazing love online. Always nice to see that come up in your RSS reader.
Thanks to Joel and every one at Fog Creek for an awesome open house. It’s clear why they are so well respected as each member of Fog Creek was extremely friendly, Joel in particular. Definitely the best hosted meetup I’ve been to in a long time.
Using your browser URL history to estimate gender. I’m 99% male. The thing I find funny is that this is one of the few “gender tests” where I test very male. I usually have a high female bend to my habbits.
Five Awesome Complainers
With the internet more and more people are getting their 15 minutes of fame and more and more people don’t know what to do with it.
The Five Awesome Guys channel has been hugely successful surpassing The Five Awesome Girls by double with 20,000 subscribers. But on youtube even obscurity can bring horribly mean comments from perfect strangers.
The Five Awesome Guys have stopped making videos which is fine but in addition they have begun a series of videos where they talk about how much they hate their fans.
They will argue that they are only talking about a small part of their fan base but they are making a grave mistake by generalizing.
It’s sad when people are mean to you and I’m sure the five awesome guys are getting thousands of comments from a couple hundred users they wish they were not getting. But letting a small percentage affect your decisions will just annoy everyone.
Talking bad about your fans is never good. Stop being emo guys. If youtube hasn’t taught you to ignore bad comments then I don’t know what will.
Imaginary Bitches
This show is pretty good. Really well acted.
Gmail has updated it’s contact manager. It still saves every email address you come across but it stores them separately. I used to have 900 contacts and now I have 200 contacts I have emailed and 700 that have just come across my path. Managing contacts just got a little more sane.
I’ve been waiting for Google to spin out the contact manager as it’s own app for a long time now. There is no good contact manager online and Gmail has treated their as more of an after thought then a well polished feature.
Act 1 of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is out and it’s awesome. Totally buying the DVD.
The First Non-Native Candidate
Well it seems official to me that McCain is not a natural born citizen and is technically not able to be president. In regards to McCain in particular I certainly think he is qualified to run even if he does not meet the current standard. McCain’s lawyers argue that technicality was not ever intended but instead of trusting people to follow the spirit of the law congress did move to fix the problem.
It’s these kind of cracks that should let us reevaluate if our standards are correct. I certainly think we could have a much more broadly defined qualification with out much change. That a citizen who identifies with America far more then any other nationality might be sufficient if extremely hard to test for. For the most part I think the election process is enough the rule out anyone who is not viscerally American.
Inadvertent Author Geocaching
A new game has appeared on youtube unbenounced to the people playing it. Author Geocaching consists of an author signing a book in a book store (preferably their own; jump to the 3 min mark) and then a fan rushing to the store to find it. I hope more authors expand this idea. Perhaps reshelving the book in a fun place.
Neal Stephenson does a pretty amazing breakdown (if dryly read) of the Speculative Fiction genera as he tries to define it and then jumps in to the intellectual stratosphere (around the 30 min mark) has he breaks down why current post structuralist literary critics look down on it as naive and unintellectual.
Charlie the Unicorn 1 & 2
Very much ala Adult Swim or Adventure Time.
It was recently reported that for the first time in history, there are now more overweight than malnourished people in the world. Umm… good? This idea just seems so odd to me. Like we are force feeding people in africa with twinkines or something.
